Costa Rica's biological diversity includes an extraordinary
richness of amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, and
caecilians), but the country has a size of just 51,023 square
kilometers. With 188 species of amphibians, it is the
richest
country in the world regarding amphibian diversity density,
with 3.68 species of amphibians per 1,000 square kilometers of
national territory. Many of these amphibians are struggling
to survive in the ever-changing environment and their future
remains uncertain.
The Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center (C.R.A.R.C.) is a conservational and biological research center
dedicated to studying and conserving one of the most important
animal groups of Neotropical humid forest ecosystems, that of the
amphibians. The work being
done there is an effort to ensure that they will experience a
brighter and more secure future.
